Sotto stated that he was not a culprit in Paloma’s rape and denied using his position in government to influence court judgment. Before being chosen as a senator in 1992, Sotto served as vice mayor of Quezon City from 1988 to 1990.
In 2018, the older Sotto urged The Philippine Inquirer to delete published online information regarding the Pepsi Paloma Case harmful to his present status as a Senator.
