David Baxter Obituary, Death – We mourn the loss of a dear friend within the music community, David Gavan Baxter. The past few years have been marked by numerous losses, making the weight of grief ever more challenging to bear. Last Saturday, I had the privilege of speaking with David on the phone, where he candidly shared that his time on this earth was drawing to a close. In response, I felt compelled to journey to Toronto to be by his side, along with his family and friends.

The send-off David received was a testament to the profound impact he had on the lives of those who knew him. Days filled with friends visiting, sharing their thoughts, singing songs, and holding his hand unfolded, creating a heartfelt and poignant farewell. Even in his waning strength, he continued to direct and produce, offering musical guidance and, with his characteristic wit, humorously chiding Kevin Breit for “too many chords.”

A group of us gathered around his bedside on Wednesday evening, singing songs and creating a lively atmosphere that resonated with the spirit of camaraderie. While Thursday proved to be more challenging for him, David was able to express the depth of his appreciation for the love surrounding him, even receiving a message from his guitar hero, Tom Bukovac.

I am profoundly honored to have spent three days by his side, sharing songs and reminiscing about our enduring friendship. David was one of my earliest supporters, a steadfast cheerleader and guide who believed in me when few others did. He had a unique ability to be both grumpy and endearing, a trait that could sometimes drive you to distraction.

Many recognize him for his remarkable talents as a guitarist and producer, but David’s creative repertoire extended to songwriting, a craft in which he excelled. Our first encounter, a whimsical waltz on Ward’s Island, blossomed into a co-write that symbolized the beginning of our artistic journey together. We went on to create music, embark on tours, and form invaluable connections with musicians and friends alike.

David was a complex individual, aptly described by his doctor as “the lovable crusty sort.” He was fiercely loyal and cherished his friendships, with a deep sense of pride in his son. His life was an ode to music, and the legacy he leaves behind is a testament to his enduring passion and talent.

For me, the void left by his absence is immeasurable. I will miss our conversations, his unique sense of humor, his candid advice, and his indomitable spirit. My deepest sympathies go out to his family during this difficult time. #davidgavanbaxter
