Brent Gonzalez Obituary, Death – Santa Clara University is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished athletes and contributors, Brent Gonzalez, who passed away at the age of 46 after a brave and tenacious battle with cancer. Born in 1977, Brent’s impact on the Santa Clara community extended far beyond his time as a student-athlete, leaving an indelible mark on the university’s athletic legacy. Brent Gonzalez attended Santa Clara from 1995-99, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication. He became an integral part of the men’s basketball program during the 1995-96 season, a team that achieved a remarkable 20-9 overall record, shared the WCC regular-season title, and earned a coveted 10th seed in the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

The collective achievements of that exceptional team were recognized in 2017 when they were collectively inducted into the Santa Clara Athletics Hall of Fame, a testament to their enduring impact on the university’s sports history. Beyond his exploits on the court, Gonzalez continued to embody the spirit of dedication and service to Santa Clara Athletics. In 2019, he was honored with the prestigious Jim Jennings Award, an accolade bestowed upon a senior non-athlete distinguished for unselfish and loyal service to the athletics department. After graduating, Brent served as the Broncos’ facility manager from 2000-03, further cementing his commitment to the university’s athletic success.

Santa Clara Women’s Soccer Head Coach Jerry Smith reflected on Brent’s legacy, stating, “Santa Clara University is a special place because of the many incredible people that make up our Bronco Community. Brent was one of the best humans I’ve ever been around. I hope all Broncos will continue to be there for his beautiful family. RIP Gonzo.” Bronco Athletics extends its deepest condolences to Brent’s family and friends. As we mourn the passing of an exceptional athlete, colleague, and friend, our thoughts and prayers are with those who were touched by Brent’s warmth, dedication, and enduring spirit. May his memory continue to inspire the Bronco community for generations to come.
